"How big should my greenhouse be" is one of the first questions everyone asks, and it's tempting to answer it by measuring the yard and buying the biggest thing that fits. That usually isn't the right approach — what you're growing and how you'll use the space matter more than square footage alone.
Start with what you're actually growing
A handful of tomato plants, some herbs, and seed trays for spring can realistically live in a compact 6' or 8'-wide greenhouse — there's no reason to size up just because the yard has room. If you're growing taller plants, want dedicated shelving for a real seed-starting operation, or plan to overwinter larger potted plants, you'll want the extra headroom and floor space of an 8'x12' or larger structure. And if gardening is more of a serious, year-round pursuit — multiple growing zones, a potting area, room to actually walk around a mature plant — that's when a large or commercial-grade structure starts to make sense.
Don't forget what's not "growing space"
A shelf unit, a potting bench, an aisle wide enough to actually walk down and turn around in — all of that eats into the square footage before a single plant goes in. A greenhouse that's technically 8'x8' can feel cramped fast once shelving and a workspace are in it. If you're planning to work in the space regularly rather than just check on it, size up one notch from what pure plant space would suggest.
Your yard sets a real ceiling
Beyond what you're growing, your actual footprint matters — a small or narrow yard may only realistically fit a compact freestanding model or a lean-to greenhouse built against the house or garage, which uses the wall instead of eating yard space on all four sides. Local setback rules and HOA requirements can also limit size and placement, so it's worth checking before you fall in love with a particular model.
Rough starting points
- A few plants, seed starting, hobby-level: a compact 6–8' wide greenhouse.
- Regular growing, some shelving, a small workspace: 8'x12' to 8'x16'.
- Serious, year-round growing or multiple purposes: large or commercial-grade structures.
- Small or narrow yard: a compact freestanding model or a lean-to against the house.
